The Science

The low-frequency rumble of thunder produces sound waves between 20-120 Hz, which activates the vestibular system and produces a calming effect similar to being rocked. A study in the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America found that low-frequency sounds reduce the startle response, making it harder for sudden noises to wake you.

Why It Works

Thunderstorms occupy a fascinating psychological space. While they can trigger anxiety in some, for most people thunderstorm sounds create what psychologists call cosy framing — the contrast between the perceived danger outside and the safety of being indoors amplifies feelings of comfort and security. The variable intensity of a thunderstorm actually helps maintain sleep better than constant sounds because it prevents the brain from habituating.
